Wes playing in the sandbox and looking thru HIS pair of binoculars!

Sometimes a change in perspective makes a huge difference in what you see… I was bent down talking to my son when I noticed this whole display of peaches reflected in the bottom of a scale. To bad the peaches were rock hard and not as good as they looked!

Went out with  Dad on Sunday to see if we could see the bald eagles out at Lake Manawa, Iowa.  The Omaha World Herald had made mention that there had been a lot of sightings of eagles out in the Lake Manawa area, and we have had success in the past seeing eagles there.  We hadn’t been out much at all this winter, and John and I had no idea if the ice was out on the lake or not.  In the past we were able to go over and see the eagles working fish out of the ice near the shallows, which is an unusual way to view these birds.  However, the ice has mostly melted off the lake so the eagles were up in the trees, which tends to be problematic as they don’t stay in an area which is easily accessed.   We saw 4-5 eagles flying but all were always on the other side of the lake from us!  Thankfully we lucked out and this fellow settled on a tree where we could get a close up shot of him.

Over the weekend Leah and I went to Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha to see Michael Forsberg’s Great Plains exhibit. This exhibit featured amazing images ranging from the landscapes with the huge skies and tall grass to the magnificent and reclusive grizzly. As a person growing up in the Midwest, these images really bring to life the landscape I grew up in and love!

I highly reccomend making the trip down to Joslyn to see this exhibit. It is at Joslyn until May 15th. I also recommend checking out Forsberg’s website at : http://www.michaelforsberg.com/

Ski Nebraska…

Stayed home from work today to take care of Wes while Leah dealt with a touch of the flu. Hopefully Wes and I manage to stay healthy and not come down with the bug as well. I took the opportunity while they were napping to go out and take a few shots of a maple tree in the back yard that is just gorgeous. While out there shooting pictures of the blazing leaves, I noticed there were thousands of little bugs flying around on the tree and the shed next to it. I took a closer look and found this Multicolored Asian Beetle, also known as the Halloween Beetle. Seeing how it is Halloween today, I thought it only appropriate to post this shot…

Leah and I decided to go out for a little drive the other day to see the fall colors. With all the aftermath of the accident last year, I really felt like I had missed the whole fall. I always love the colors the fall leaves bring out, and the crisp cool air. We managed to find a nice little spot at Schram State Park in Nebraska and found some nice colors.

Well the dog days of summer seem to finally have arrived in Omaha, hot and humid weather with the occasional thunderstorm to cool the nights down. The wonderfully wet, mild spring has left eastern Nebraska with a lush carpet of vegetation, and those trees that have managed to survive the wild storms are looking wonderful. The humid air and the tattered remains of afternoon thunderstorms are making for some beautiful sunsets, and having some of the cooler night air makes it a good time to go take a stroll around the neighborhood.

Walking around the neighborhood you tend to notice details you never see while driving by. Leah and I have taken to walking through the neighborhood in the late evening, looking at the sunset, enjoying the early night breeze and watching the fireflies twinkle in the grass. The warm glow of the sunset washes over everything, bathing objects in a beautiful golden glow. While walking I noticed this maple tree had a reflected glow from the sun hitting a window, so I stopped and managed to get this shot.

In other news, Leah continues to do well, the baby has been quite active, kicking, wiggling and stretching as much as it can. Leah sometimes wonders if the baby is trying to escape! We are both looking forward to getting to meet our little one, but at the same time want the time to go a bit more slowly so we can try to get some tasks accomplished before our attention is turned to a newborn.

We are also excited to get to see Britanie, as she is back in Nebraska for a week long visit. We expect she will be excited to get to see the baby bump has grown quite a bit since our visit to Boston earlier this spring. Looking forward to hearing about her summer job as a legal aide at Harvard law is going, and hearing more about her explorations of Boston. Also looking forward to getting to demonstrate the smoker, and giving her some good ole fashioned midwest BBQ!

Fun night tonight here in Nebraska, hot and muggy like a shower, with a big strong warm front right on top of us. One of those days that you know the weather is going to get exciting.

Tornado sirens blowing, and blue skies over head… Its an odd sensation, until you take a glance to the west and realize that big black cloud rolling in from the west looks like it means business.

The daylight shots are from right after the sirens quit blowing as the storm was just getting ready to roll in, while the the night ones after the hail and the rain had passed.

Lots of big thunderstorms rolling across the plains of Nebraska today. Stepped out on the porch and was lucky enough to catch this shot…
